Free Fishing Weekend June 7, 8

Don't have a general fishing licence? No problem. People are encouraged to try their hand at sport fishing for free on Nova Scotia Sportfishing Weekend, Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8.

"Whether you're a seasoned fishing enthusiast or it's the first time you put your line in the water, I encourage people to come out June 7 and 8 to discover or rediscover the joys of angling," said Keith Colwell, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture. "It's a great opportunity for families to spend time together."

More than 70,000 people participate in sportfishing each year, making it one of the province's most popular active outdoor sports. It contributes about $58 million to Nova Scotia's economy each year.

Mr. Colwell encourages all anglers to put safety first when fishing this season.

"Sportfishing is a unique and enjoyable outdoor experience, but I would like to remind all anglers to use caution this season and enjoy the outdoors safely," said Mr. Colwell. "I especially urge those on the water to use floatation devices."
