Government Announces Sites for New Schools

Sites have been chosen and approved for new, state-of-the-art schools in Tatamagouche and Bible Hill.

The new schools will be built on existing school properties that were submitted by the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board and approved by Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Karen Casey.

"Students, parents, community members and school boards can take comfort in knowing that we have listened to their advice and selected sites that are familiar to students and easily accessible to communities," said Ms. Casey. "I am pleased the projects are moving forward and that these communities are closer to having new schools that will suit their needs for years to come."

In Tatamagouche, a new P-12 school will replace North Colchester High and Tatamagouche Elementary. The new school will be located on the property of the existing North Colchester High School. This project was announced in the 2014-15 capital plan.

In Bible Hill, a new P-4 school will replace Bible Hill Central and Bible Hill East Court Road elementary schools. The new school will be located on the property of the existing Bible Hill Central Elementary School. This project was announced in 2009 and reconfirmed in 2012 as part of the 2013-14 capital plan.

"Government is keeping its commitment to move forward with new school capital projects to ensure students are learning in safe, modern and well-equipped environments," said Ms. Casey. "I am pleased that we are making progress and the next steps can begin to get the schools built as efficiently as possible."

Now that the sites have been announced, a school steering team will be established in each community to provide input to the project management and design team throughout the design phases of the project. The steering teams will work with Chignecto-Central Regional School Board and departments of Education and Early Childhood Development and Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal over the next several months to develop the design before construction begins.
