Funding Announced for Windsor Wastewater Treatment Facility

Officials from three levels of government announced more funding for the Windsor Wastewater Treatment facility today, Aug. 14.

"The province is pleased to partner with the federal government and the Town of Windsor to contribute to this much needed facility," said Municipal Affairs Minister Mark Furey. "Through the construction of the new wastewater treatment facility, and by better managing existing facilities, we will keep our communities healthier, and help to protect our environment."

To help the Town of Windsor with construction, the province is investing an additional $1,576,242, bringing the total provincial investment to $3,753,942. The government of Canada is investing an additional $592,241 for a total federal investment of $2,769,941. The Town of Windsor is investing $3,537,669 in the project, which costs $10,061,552.

"A new wastewater treatment facility will keep Windsor safe, healthy and environmentally sustainable for many years to come," said Gerald Keddy, Parliamentary Secretary for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. "Our government is pleased to partner with our provincial and municipal colleagues to invest in critical community assets such as this one. Dependable public infrastructure is essential to the well-being of Canadian families and to Canada's long-term prosperity."

The Windsor Wastewater Treatment Facility is being funded by the three levels of government under the Building Canada – Communities Component Fund, which supports municipal infrastructure development. The additional funding and timeline extension is needed to ensure the project meets provincial and federal environmental regulations, and the design can accommodate increased capacity in future years.

"This is a project that is long overdue and will serve our community and future generations as a legacy of good governance and safe and healthy living," said Windsor Mayor Paul Beazley.

The new facility will treat wastewater from households that are not served by the existing treatment plant in Windsor. This will reduce health and safety risks, and protect community residents and the environment. The project includes treatment lagoons, piping, pumping stations, mechanical equipment and a modern screening system.
