37th Annual Nova Scotia 4-H Show To Be Held in Bible Hill

4-H members are looking forward to a special event this fall, the 37th annual Nova Scotia 4-H show, the largest in Canada.

The 4-H show takes place Sept. 26-28, at the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition Grounds in Bible Hill. The annual family event offers something for everyone and is an excellent opportunity for the public to experience the 4-H youth leadership program in an interactive way.

The provincial event will have 40 projects, 90 classes, and 2,400 entries displayed. The exhibitors at the event are 4-H members from nine to 21 years of age and are eligible to compete at this event only after achieving top honours at a local exhibition with their life skills or livestock projects.

4-H alumni often comment on the impact the program has had on them and identify leadership and youth development as the most important goals of 4-H.

Jacob Works, a 20-year-old 4-H member from the Clifton 4-H Club in Colchester County, was employed as the 4-H summer assistant with the Department of Agriculture in Truro this past summer.

"No other organization can offer the same caliber of leadership development for our youth as 4-H can," said Mr. Works. "I have led societies, founded clubs, and taken an active role on provincial and national boards. I credit my achievements to the success of the Nova Scotia 4-H program."

Agriculture Minister Keith Colwell said Nova Scotia has a dynamic 4-H program and spectators can see it in action during the weekend.

"The technical, communication and life skills that youth learn in this program are invaluable. Many excellent leaders in agriculture, community and business have gone through the 4-H program," said Mr. Colwell.

Each year a county or region hosts the 4-H show and this year the Eastern Region 4-H Leaders Councils (Antigonish, Pictou and Guysborough) have the responsibility of making site arrangements, providing security, fundraising and promotion.

Highlights of the Nova Scotia 4-H Show include livestock auctions, a fashion show, dog obedience and handling trials, a tug of war, bake-off, grand champion showmanship class, and dairy and beef cattle selections for the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto.

Nova Scotia 4-H families and the general public are invited to attend this free event to view the livestock and life skills learned by 4-H members across the province.
