Shubenacadie Sam Predicts Six More Weeks of Winter

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Nova Scotia's famous groundhog prognosticator Shubenacadie Sam saw his shadow today, Feb. 2, meaning a predication of six more weeks of winter for Nova Scotia.

As the legend goes, when Sam sees his shadow, we are due for a longer winter.

"Given the weather forecast and the amount of snow currently on the ground, Sam's prediction likely isn't a surprise to most Nova Scotians," said Natural Resources Minister Zach Churchill. "I'd like to thank Sam and all the staff at the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park for the preparation they put into Groundhog Day and for such a fun morning of activities."

Nova Scotia's time zone means Sam's prediction is the first in North America.

A large crowd gathered this morning at the park to participate in the Groundhog Day festivities.
