Nova Scotians Urged To Show Respect and Support for All

Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission

The Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission is encouraging Nova Scotians to show support and act compassionately in response to recent terrorist activity.

"As Canadians, we belong to a human family whose rights are no different than our own," said Eunice Harker, chair of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission. "Violence motivated by racism, discrimination and fear threatens to worsen what is already a tragic circumstance for many. This is a time for understanding.

"Attacks and violence, motivated by discrimination on the basis of race or religion, demonstrate a need for solidarity and reflection upon our individual actions."

As a member of the Canadian Statutory Human Rights Associations, Nova Scotia supports last week's statement by the Canadian Human Rights Commission calling for balance between human rights and security measures.

Religion, race and colour are protected characteristics under the Nova Scotia Human Rights Act. Incidents of racism or discrimination can be addressed by contacting the Human Rights Commission. Visit http://humanrights.gov.ns.ca to learn more.
