The provincial government is extending the Low Income Fuel
Assistance Program to Nova Scotians who heat their homes with
propane. Angus MacIsaac, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and
Municipal Relations made the announcement today.
"Just like the price of furnace oil, the price of propane has
shot up as a result of high crude oil prices. While there may be
a small percentage of people who use propane to heat their homes,
they are also feeling the pinch," he said.
The price of propane for residential home heating consumers is up
almost 50 per cent, or 20 cents per litre, over December 1999.
The Low Income Fuel Assistance Program will provide $50 to
families with a net income of $16,500 or less, single people
earning $9,500 or less, seniors who receive the guaranteed income
supplement or spouse's allowance and people receiving social
assistance.
Applications will be available at the end of the month in all
Access Nova Scotia Centres, Registry of Motor Vehicles offices
and Community Services offices.
