Volunteers from across Nova Scotia were honoured today, April 12, at the 36th annual Provincial Volunteer Awards in Halifax.
More than 70 dedicated volunteers, nominated by people in the communities they work so hard to improve, received a well-deserved thank you.
"All over Nova Scotia, volunteers are improving the quality of life for their fellow citizens," said Premier Darrell Dexter. "I speak on behalf of everyone in our province when I say thank you for all that you give."
The Provincial Volunteer Awards serve as an early kick-off to National Volunteer Week, celebrated April 18 to 24.
More than half of Nova Scotians identify themselves as volunteers, giving the province one of the highest rates of volunteering in Canada.
The generous contributions of more than 500,000 Nova Scotian volunteers are estimated to be worth $1.8 billion to the provincial economy.
Marilyn More, Minister of Volunteerism, stressed the importance of volunteering and the skills, experience and passion that volunteers bring to communities.
"Volunteers support community organizations in so many different ways providing essential programs and services in communities all across Nova Scotia," said Ms. More. "I encourage all Nova Scotians to get involved, volunteer and give back."
Eighteen year old Gillian Bond of Chester is one of the nominees for Youth Volunteer of the Year.
"Volunteers are the backbone of many communities and the experiences are always worthwhile," said Ms. Bond. "When an opportunity for volunteering arises, I am always ready to give back to my community."
Ms. Bond volunteers with several organizations including Junior Achievement, Cadets Canada, the Chester United Baptist Church and the local legion.
