Administrative Updates Proposed for Gaming Control Act

Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations

November 18, 2011 9:17 AM

Proposed administrative amendments to the Gaming Control Act will ensure the division regulating alcohol and gaming for the province will continue to run smoothly.

The amendments will formalize in legislation the current structure of the Alcohol and Gaming Division of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. The existing legislation reflects a structure that was in place when the work was done by an arms' length agency. This has not been the case since 2000.

"Since the division is no longer an arms' length agency, the province can eliminate the need for government to appoint positions, making the staffing process more efficient," said John MacDonell, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations.

The changes recognize that the directors' positions at the Alcohol and Gaming Division are filled through the Public Service Commission, rather than being appointed by the government. These technical changes to the act will not make any noticeable difference to the public or regulated organizations.
