Premier Congratulates de Jonge for Olympic Bronze Medal

Premier Darrell Dexter congratulated Mark de Jonge of Halifax for his exciting bronze-medal win in the men's K-1 200m final today, Aug. 11, at the Olympic Games in London.
The Maskwa Aquatic Club kayaker narrowly missed silver, with a photo finish needed to determine second and third place. De Jonge took the bronze in a time of 36.657 seconds.
"A bronze medal is a fantastic accomplishment for Mark, especially considering he hasn't competed in a major national event this year," said Premier Dexter. "His hard work and determination after returning to the sport has made Nova Scotians extremely proud."
Mr. De Jonge broke a finger in training during the spring and missed the entire World Cup season. He had also taken more than two years off from competition after the last Olympics before returning to the sport.
Mr. De Jonge won his heat and semifinal Friday. This is the debut of the 200-metre events at the Olympics, replacing the 500-metre events.
The bronze was Canada's 18th medal at the London Olympic Games, equalling the number Canada won in Beijing in 2008.
