Five outstanding Nova Scotians were honoured for their lasting contributions to the province at a ceremony held today, Nov. 28.

Lt.-Gov. J.J. Grant, chancellor of the Order of Nova Scotia, was joined by Finance Minister Maureen MacDonald, on behalf of Premier Darrell Dexter, and Viola Robinson, chair of the Order of Nova Scotia Advisory Council, to invest the recipients into the order.

"Those being recognized today join not only the distinguished membership of the Order of Nova Scotia, they also become a part of the history of our province," said Lt.-Gov. Grant. "They join an extensive lineage of proud Nova Scotians who have been recognized by the Crown."

The 2012 Order of Nova Scotia recipients are:

  • Author and educator, Silver Donald Cameron, Halifax
  • Influential publisher and philanthropist Graham Dennis, Halifax (posthumous)
  • Politician and social rights activist, Alexa Ann McDonough, Halifax
  • Historian and author, Robert James Morgan, Sydney (posthumous)
  • Author, educator and community activist, Bridglal Pachai, Halifax

"For over a decade, we have recognized the extraordinary achievements and contributions of individuals by investing them into the Order," said Ms. MacDonald. "Each member stands as a shining example for us to follow and they have truly made Nova Scotia a better place to live."

The recipients were selected by the Order of Nova Scotia Advisory Council from 84 nominations.

"This year's recipients have made lasting and enduring contributions to our communities through their careers, their philanthropy, and their dedication to improving the lives of their fellow Nova Scotians," said Ms. Robinson. "Our nominations for the provincial order continue to be among the highest in the country and I encourage all Nova Scotians to continue to nominate, and re-nominate people they feel are deserving."

The 2012 recipients were recognized at the 11th investiture ceremony at Government House.

The Order of Nova Scotia was established in June 2001 and is the highest honour bestowed by the province. Recipients have the right to use the initials O.N.S. after their names.
