Annual Program Celebrates Reading

Communities, Culture and Heritage (Jan. 2011 - Aug. 2021)

If you are looking for a family activity to do this weekend and throughout the summer, look no further than your local library.

The TD Summer Reading Club launches this month nationwide and public libraries are hosting a variety of activities that include author visits, story-telling sessions, reading games, book discussions and related crafts.

“This annual reading program is a great opportunity for adults to share their joy of reading with the children in their lives,” said Leonard Preyra, Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage. “It inspires Nova Scotia’s youngest people to read all summer long and encourages them to visit their local libraries.”

This year the theme is GO!, encouraging children to journey to any place they want to go through the magic of reading.

“Nova Scotia is the perfect place for GO!” said Teresa Workman, communications co-ordinator for South Shore Public Libraries. “The club encourages kids to explore summer, explore outdoors and, of course, explore books. The TD Summer Reading Club enables public libraries to offer a consistent and fun message about the importance of reading.”

Children aged five to 12 can register online at the TD Summer Reading Club website, tdsummerreadingclub.ca or at their local library. They will receive a free reading kit that includes a program poster, stickers and an activity booklet to track progress. The site also features stories, jokes, a scavenger hunt, and suggestions for books based on themes and age categories.

“Reading during the summer helps kids retain their hard-learned reading skills,” said Angela Reynolds, head of Youth Services, Annapolis Valley Regional Library. “Read a book, a magazine, listen to an audio, read aloud as a family - it all counts toward your summer reading goal."

In 2012, 14,697 children registered in the program and 118,215 books were read.

Families can contact local library branches to find out more about program registration and other special events. It runs to the end of August. For more information and to register visit a local library or go online to publiclibraries.ns.ca or the TD Summer Reading Club website.

The Summer Reading Club is a national initiative organized by TD Bank Financial Group in co-operation with Library and Archives Canada, and is implemented annually through public libraries.
