Province, Industry Connecting Employees with Job Opportunities

The province is partnering with the industry to connect BlackBerry, Convergys and Xerox employees with businesses looking for talented Nova Scotians.

"There is no question these recent layoffs are tough and stressful for the people affected and their families. We know this is a very emotional time for many people," said Kelly Regan, Minister of Labour and Advanced Education. "Thankfully, we have a very strong information technology sector here in Nova Scotia and we have many businesses looking to hire these talented employees."

On Thursday, Nov. 28, Digital Nova Scotia, Contact Centre Nova Scotia, Greater Halifax Partnership and the province are hosting a career fair, Get Connected. The fair will give workers a chance to meet with local companies looking to fill positions in information technology and customer support. Close to 40 top employers are expected to participate.

Information and communications technology is expanding faster than any other sector in the province.

"NTT DATA is a growing IT company. Despite recent challenges in some industries, we are seeing a continued demand for these IT skills in our Halifax development centre," said NTT DATA Canada human resources manager Lianne Landry. "We look forward to the opportunity to meet with potential employees later this month."

The province offers a number of programs to help Nova Scotians affected by job loss prepare for new opportunities, like skills training, career development and employment counselling.

"These skilled workers are in demand, and this career fair will help to connect them with the businesses who want them, or the training they need to land another well-paying job here at home," said Ms. Regan.
