Grand Lake, Kytes Hill Roads Safety Recommendations to be Shared at Public Meeting

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (Oct. 2007 - Feb. 2021)

Residents of Grand Lake Road and Kytes Hill Road in Sydney will have a chance to comment on road safety recommendations at an upcoming public meeting.

Consultants will present results of a road safety review of the Grand Lake Road/Kytes Hill intersection.

The meeting will take place on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 3:30 p.m. at the Grand Lake Road Volunteer Fire Hall, 866 Grand Lake Rd., Sydney.

"I encourage all those who regularly use or live along the Grand Lake Road to come to the public meeting," said Geoff MacLellan, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. "The consultants will present their road safety review results and we'll be looking for feedback on the options to make this busy road safer."

The province hired consultants Hatch Mott MacDonald to review the area in order to address safety concerns from residents.

Copies of the consultant's presentation will be available to residents at the time of the meeting. For those unable to attend, feedback on the review results can be e-mailed to kyteshillcomments@gov.ns.ca .

The deadline for feedback is Jan. 31.

The upcoming meeting is a follow up from a spring session where the consultants presented their plan to review the road. Over the following months, the consultants worked with a steering committee of representatives from Cape Breton Regional Municipality, local police, and the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal to identify possible solutions to improve road safety.

Immediately after the spring meeting, the province took action to install short-term safety measures, including:

  • new, clearer painted road lines, including edge lines
  • new, oversized signs in the area
  • signs more clearly identifying intersections, turning directions and speed limits
  • electronic speed-feedback signs located east and westbound on the Grand Lake Road showing drivers how fast they are travelling
