Shoppers will be able to learn how to shear sheep at the Mic Mac Mall in Dartmouth on Friday, Aug. 22 and Saturday, Aug. 23.

The third annual Meet Your Farmer at the Mall event will feature information booths in the Bay Court, hosted by Nova Scotia farm organizations, cooking demonstrations with local foods and a local chef, a farm animal display outside the Old Navy entrance and children's activities.

A sheep shearing demonstration starts at 1 p.m., followed by a book launch for Explore Farming in Nova Scotia. A free copy of the book will be given out to children at the event.

"Bringing farmers, food organizations and a chef to the mall will also help raise awareness with consumers and encourage them to support our agriculture industry by buying local," said Agriculture Minister Keith Colwell. "The Explore Farming in Nova Scotia book is a wonderful resource to help teach our young people the importance of farming in our province."

The event is supported by the federal and provincial governments though Growing Forward 2, the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture, and affiliated commodity groups. The aim is to raise awareness about local agriculture, the benefits of buying local food and make the connection to buying local food.

"Our government is pleased to partner once again with the province to bring agriculture to the city," said federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz. "Meet Your Farmer at the Mall gives Nova Scotians the unique opportunity to put a face on the industry that helps feed their families and the overall economy."

About 23,000 people visit Mic Mac Mall daily.

"This event is a real opportunity for agriculture to meet with consumers in a unique setting," said Dennis Boudreau, president of the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture. "We are happy to be a part of Meet Your Farmer at the Mall and the launching of the Nova Scotia farm book. We are proud to showcase agriculture and all it has to offer all Nova Scotians."
