Pop-Up Kitchen Stories Highlight Local Food, Film Festival in Wolfville

Nova Scotians are once again enjoying good local food and film at the 5th annual Devour! Film and Food Festival in Wolfville.

The festival, running until Sunday, Nov. 8, includes food-related activities, the Select Nova Scotia food truck rally featuring tasty food made with local ingredients, and films that celebrate food culture around the world.

Three filmed vignettes that help kick-off the festival feature kitchen pop-ups with the Kilted Chef that were held around the province in October.

The Kilted Chef, Alain Bossé, a specialist in Maritime Canadian cuisine, travelled the province cooking with local food at three locations that were named to reflect the food featured.

Pulled pork sandwiches were on the menu for lunch at the Pulled Pork Williams event at Port Williams Elementary school. Breakfast frittatas were served at the Fritatamagouche pop-up at the Tatamagouche Farmers' Market; and lunch was chili in the Chilifax event at the Halifax Central Library. "Our goal is to get Nova Scotians eating more local food and these provincial pop-ups certainly put the fun in food," said acting Agriculture Minister Geoff MacLellan. "Linking communities to the local fare Nova Scotians can find right in their neighborhoods was an excellent way to encourage buying local."

"It was a great opportunity to visit communities in the province,” said Chef Bossé. “We fed hundreds of Nova Scotians and showed them how easy it is to commit to local."

Other festival events include: a chef-off where local chefs showcase their local cuisine; 50 of the best culinary films; workshops and panels; the 'best of the fest' where a Golden Tine will be awarded; food and wine excursions throughout Kings County; and food trucks to tempt every palette and budget.

"The Devour! Food and Film Festival has truly become a signature event for anyone who enjoys good food with a local connection," said Mr. MacLellan. "Events like this are helping to create the conditions that will fuel the success of local producers."
