Legislature Rises After Fall Session

Government continued with its commitment to make tough choices to protect the services and programs that are important to Nova Scotians, during the second session of the 62nd general assembly, which wrapped up today, Dec. 18.

"Change is not without challenges and making tough decisions," said Premier Stephen McNeil. "Government is committed to a fiscal plan which will lead Nova Scotia into a strong and prosperous future."

Legislation was introduced to provide public sector employers with a wage framework that respects collective bargaining rights, is affordable to taxpayers and consistent with government's fiscal plan. It also ensures newer, lower-paid public sector employees receive larger pay increases, protects pensions, benefits and vacation time.

Government also introduced legislation to:

• implement key elements of the province's new electricity plan to create a future with predictable and stable rates for Nova Scotians
• extend the moratorium on oil and gas exploration and drilling on Georges Bank to Dec. 31, 2022, which will protect the area of important fishing grounds
• put children's interests first when families break up and implement guidelines that families must follow when a parent or guardian wishes to move away with their children
• reduce regulation, cut red tape and position the province to be more competitive through the joint office of the Maritime provinces, Regulatory Affairs and Service Effectiveness
• make it easier to vote in municipal and school board elections
• enhance protections for employees who make inquiries or provide information to Labour Standards officials
• increase public safety by making paramedics a self-regulating profession
• allow the use of Segways and other personal transporters on sidewalks

"I look forward to building on what we have accomplished this session," said Premier McNeil. "We have to continue to make the tough decisions to achieve long-term benefits for our province."
