Nova Scotians now have free, easy access to a wealth of government data.

Premier Stephen McNeil launched the Open Data portal today, Feb. 5, making more than 130 government data collections available to individuals, researchers and entrepreneurs.

"Open Data is about drawing on the collective knowledge and innovation of Nova Scotians to help grow our economy and improve the lives of those around us," said Premier McNeil.

"Open data is one part of our vision for an open and accountable government. By making our data widely available, individuals have easier access to the information they can use to understand their government, support their businesses, gain new insights and make new discoveries."

The portal has provincial government data for weather, traffic volumes, tender awards, civic addresses, maps, historical vital statistics, angling and fish stocking records and more. Data collections will continue to be added as they become available.

The information appears in accessible, easy-to-work-with formats and contains some data that was once only available for a fee. No personal or identifying information will be released.

The portal is at data.novascotia.ca/ .
