Government, Film Industry Continue to Make Progress

Representatives of government and Screen Nova Scotia met this week to continue discussions on the Film and Television Production Incentive Fund.

"We care about this industry. We're proud of their success and we recognize the value to the economy and the jobs the industry creates for Nova Scotians," said Business Minister Mark Furey. "The industry has been going through a period of adjustment to the new program, but I believe it can and it will succeed."

An important point of clarification discussed was the industry's perception of a cap on the fund. To that end representatives from government and industry will meet regularly to closely track the fund spending, commitments and potential new productions. If eligible productions come forward when the fund is approaching or has reached its $10 million budget allocation, government will consider more resources on a case-by-case basis.

Since the fund launched in July 2015, 13 productions have been approved.

"We want the world to know we're open for business and that means moving forward together with confidence and optimism," said Mr. Furey.

Discussions continue with Screen Nova Scotia, government and Nova Scotia Business Inc. to make the administration of the fund as efficient as possible.

These efforts build on earlier progress announced last November to provide $475,000 to Screen Nova Scotia to hire an executive director, develop a strategic plan, and support locations, scouting and international marketing and promotions.
