Nova Scotians Pay Tribute to Workers and Families

Nova Scotians will pay tribute to workers who died on the job or from work related injuries at Day of Mourning ceremonies across the province today, April 28.

"One illness, one injury, or one life is too much when someone is just doing their job," said Vicki Dickson, Threads of Life member and wife of Kevin Dickson, who was killed in a workplace incident in 2011. "This is a day that we can all pay tribute to those workers who have died or continue to suffer because of their work."

Labour and Advanced Education Minister Kelly Regan and WCB Nova Scotia CEO Stuart MacLean will join Ms. Dickson and representatives from the Federation of Labour at a ceremony today at Province House in Halifax.

"Today is about coming together to honour those workers who were killed or injured on the job, and to show support for their families and loved ones," said Ms. Regan. "This day serves to remind us all of the importance of safety, and helps to ignite efforts across the province to eliminate workplace illnesses, injuries and deaths."

In 2015, 27 Nova Scotian workers lost their lives at work or because of work-related injuries.

• Royal Canadian Legion Branch 128, 850 Victoria Rd, Sydney, at 11 a.m.
• Fisherman's Memorial, Water St., Yarmouth, at 12:15 p.m.
