Crime Prevention Award Nominations Open
Nova Scotians can help recognize someone dedicated to preventing crime in their community by nominating them for a Minister's Award for Leadership in Crime Prevention.
Nominations for the awards are now being accepted.
"Crime prevention is about addressing the root causes that can lead to criminal activity," said Justice Minister Diana Whalen. "Many community organizations do excellent work in this area. They are innovative and proactive in their approach and deserve recognition."
There are many ways to prevent crime, from developing partnerships and programs that address the root causes, to providing leadership in the community, to supporting others in their efforts.
This is the seventh year for the Minister's Crime Prevention Awards.
The Department of Justice is accepting nominations in six categories:
- individual
- youth (21 and under)
- community group or organization
- policing
- restorative justice / restorative approaches
- corporate
Award criteria:
- commitment: showing a commitment to crime prevention and enhancing the safety of their community and others throughout Nova Scotia
- empowerment: empowering their community to take crime prevention action and making their community a safer place to live
- leadership: encouraging others to take crime prevention action in their communities
- working together: building partnerships that tackle the root causes of crime
- innovative, inclusive and flexible: demonstrating innovation, inclusiveness, and flexibility in response to the changing circumstances in their communities, as well as the changing patterns of crime throughout Nova Scotia.
