Scouts, Province Combine for Learn2Camp Program
Nova Scotians can learn the fundamentals of camping assisted by Scouts Canada during the Learn2Camp weekend at Blomidon Provincial Park this summer.
Nova Scotians have until Thursday, June 30 to register for a fun, active Learn2Camp program to be held on July 9 and 10.
"We welcome Scouts Canada to the Learn2Camp program and know they will help our campers experience the joys of the outdoor experience in our provincial parks," said Natural Resources Minister Lloyd Hines. "This is a great program for Nova Scotians and, especially, for new Canadians in our province."
The Learn2Camp program will provide tents and meals for a family of four for just $60. Participants need bring only bedding and personal items. This year Scouts Canada members are partnering with the Department of Natural Resources to teach basic camping skills.
"Our scouts are thrilled to be part of this provincial park program to help teach others the satisfaction of cooking over an open fire and sleeping under the stars," said Ian MacDonald, a member of the Kings Area Learn2Camp Team with Scouts Canada, Nova Scotia Council.
The scouts will teach new campers how to choose camping sites and outdoor cooking equipment, how to make a meal, set up and break down camp, and campfire safety. Participants will have the option of learning how to geocache, pack for a day hike, play camp games for the whole family, or go on a nature hike. There will also be activities for youth.
The province supplies a loaner family-sized tent and a flashlight or lantern. Saturday lunch and supper as well as Sunday morning breakfast are provided. Up to two other people can be added to the group for $10 each.
