Recreation Facility Funding for Halifax

Funding for playground equipment in Halifax Regional Municipality will make it easier and safer for children to play outdoors.

Halifax Regional Municipality will receive a $30,000 grant from the province through the Recreation Facility Development Program for playground equipment at Sir Charles Tupper School. Grants to organizations in the Halifax area total $599,000 this year.

"Safe, sturdy playground equipment is essential for schools and neighbourhoods," said Joachim Stroink, MLA for Halifax Chebucto, on behalf of Tony Ince, Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage. "The government is investing to make physical and community activity a part of people's daily lives."

Through the program, government will invest more than $1.8 million for 65 new and upgraded facilities around the province.

"This is such exciting news," said Patricia Woodbury, principal of Sir Charles Tupper School. "The Tupper school community has worked hard to raise funds for a new playground. We appreciate this support from government in helping us to reach our goal of providing a space for safe and fun physical activity."

The grants help community groups, municipalities and other not-for-profit organizations to develop facilities to increase public participation in sport and physical recreation. Examples include renovations to buildings, developing and maintaining walking trails, and building and upgrading fields for sport and recreation.
