Horseback Riding Program Receives Mental Health Grant

Today, Aug. 12, the province announced a $22,480 community mental health and addictions grant to support a horseback riding program in Aylesford, Kings Co.

"Living with a mental illness isn't just about getting treatment in a hospital or medical clinic," said Health and Wellness Minister Leo Glavine. "Community support is vital for the one in five Nova Scotians who are dealing with these challenges. Investing in programs that give people motivation and a sense of achievement improves quality of life for the people who take part, and those who love them."

The grant is going to the Free Spirit Therapeutic Riding Association which offers programs to people of all ages who are living with mental illness or other disabilities. It was founded in 2012.

"At the Free Spirit Therapeutic Riding Association, the horses are the unspoken heroes, building confidence, demonstrating success and touching the lives of all of those involved," said Brittany Pulsifer, the association's executive director.

In total, the province will award more than $600,000 worth of community mental health and addictions grants this year.
