Funding for Accessible Transit Services in Cape Breton Regional Municipality

Cape Breton Regional Municipality has been able to purchase a new Handi-Trans vehicle with the help of a $45,000 provincial grant.

The funding is part of the Accessible Transportation Assistance Program. The program helps transit services purchase accessible vehicles or modify existing vehicles to make them accessible.

"Public transit is an important service that contributes to healthy, sustainable communities," said Municipal Affairs Minister Zach Churchill. "Accessible vehicles help ensure that all members of the community are able to get around safely."

The program provides up to 50 per cent of the total capital cost, to a maximum of $50,000, for municipal transit services.

"Handi-Trans is an important part of the daily lives of those in our community with disabilities," said CBRM Mayor Cecil Clarke. "We appreciate this provincial government support for the service."

Ten transit services across the province will receive $480,000 to purchase vehicles. More projects will be announced in the coming weeks.
