Grants Support Seniors in Digby County

Funding was announced today, Jan.16, to support safety and security for seniors and create opportunities so they can become more active in their communities.

Clare-Digby MLA Gordon Wilson announced the Senior Safety Grants on behalf of Leo Glavine, Minister of Seniors, for two organizations in Digby County.

"Older adults bring value to our communities through their ideas, knowledge and skills," said Mr. Wilson. "This funding supports safety and inclusive programs that contribute to strong, healthy communities and help us age well, now and in the future."

The Digby and Area Senior Safety Society is receiving a $20,000 grant to support home visits, workshops and information sessions that focus on the safety and health of seniors.

"The senior safety program is an essential service for seniors of the municipality and town of Digby," said Jimmy MacAlpine, Warden of the Municipality of Digby. "This support from the provincial government helps us provide important programs and services that ensure seniors continue to live safely and independently in our communities."

The Security for Seniors Association in Clare is receiving a $20,000 grant for its Security for Seniors program. The program includes home visits, as well as awareness and information sessions for seniors.

"In a rural, aging community such as ours, access to services for seniors can be challenging," said Alphonsine Saulnier, présidente, Association des séniors en sécurité. "The Senior Safety Program is an invaluable resource that allows us to identify needs, provide support and work towards the prevention of senior abuse in all its forms. In so doing, we provide a safer, healthier community for all."

Support from government helps these inclusive programs to improve safety and security for older adults and enables them to participate more fully in their communities.
