Celebrate 150 Years of Remarkable Nova Scotians

People in the province are being asked to vote for remarkable Nova Scotians from the last 150 years.

The Nova Scotia Museum is holding a competition to determine which notable Nova Scotian from each decade for the last 150 years will be showcased in a museum exhibit opening in late June.

The candidates are not necessarily the most famous. The people who have been pre-selected exemplify innovation -- often in the face of adversity -- and change, and those who champion diversity.

"This exhibit is a great opportunity to showcase Nova Scotians from many different walks of life," said Communities, Culture and Heritage Minister Tony Ince. "From the arts, entertainment, scientific research, as well as politics and community development, these past accomplishments give us optimism for the future."

Developed by the Nova Scotia Museum's Canada 150 Project Committee, 30 notable Nova Scotians will be featured in an exhibit titled Vanguard: 150 Years of Remarkable Nova Scotians. The exhibit will also include images and artifacts relating to the 30 individuals and is scheduled to open in late June at the Museum of Natural History in Halifax. Vanguard will be made available as a travelling exhibit in the fall.

The committee selected one person per decade, beginning in 1860, for the exhibit. The public, through online voting, will select the second person. Voting begins today, Feb. 27, at https://museum.novascotia.ca/ .

People nominated must have lived in Nova Scotia, made innovations in the province and made a significant impact at the provincial and national level.

The Vanguard contest complements Nova Scotia's Culture Action Plan, which is a comprehensive strategy that focuses on celebrating, sharing and growing our culture, our creative sector and our diverse communities.

Nova Scotians are celebrating Canada's 150th birthday by remembering the role the province played in creating and shaping Confederation.
