More than 100 hectares of Blanding's turtle habitat is being
protected at McGowan Lake in the Region of Queens Municipality.
Bowater Mersey Paper Company Limited has established a new
conservation area under its unique areas program. The newly
protected area is on Bowater lands adjacent to the lake.

Wentworth Provincial Park in Cumberland County will open for the
2003 camping season with a new operator. MacDonald Property
Management of Halifax Regional Municipality has been contracted
to operate the park.

Nova Scotians wanting to "drive home" the importance of
protecting endangered plants and animals can do just that.
Special licence plates recognizing species at risk are now
available for sale to vehicle owners, with proceeds going to the
province's Species at Risk Conservation Fund.

As of Tuesday, April 1, burning permits are required in the
counties of Queens, Shelburne, Yarmouth, Digby, Annapolis, Kings
and Lunenburg. Permits are required in all other counties
beginning April 15. Fire season continues through to Oct. 15.

Changes are being proposed to two sets of forestry regulations
that oversee the commercial buying and selling of wood. Natural
Resources Minister Tim Olive announced today, March 6, that the

The province has acquired 16 hectares (41 acres) of pristine
coastline in Antigonish County. Angus MacIsaac, Minister of
Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, made the
announcement in Antigonish today, Dec. 17, on behalf of Natural
Resources Minister Tim Olive.
