EDUCATION--Promoting Active Reading in Nova Scotia Classrooms
There's a buzz of activity in Paula Evans's Grade 1 classroom at
West Chezzetcook School. In one corner, students are reading a
book together. In another, they're using magnetic letters to form
words and sentences. Another group is using puppets to act out
the story they've just read. Still others are reading books on
their own.

Student enrolment in Nova Scotia's public schools continues to
drop. As of September 2001, there were 2,258 fewer students than
in the 2000-01 school year.

Twelve projects are now helping families to read and write
in communities across Nova Scotia thanks to Family Learning
Initiative Endowment Fund grants. Hugh Smith, president of
the Halifax Youth Foundation, and Education Minister Jane
Purves announced the $65,000 in funding today in recognition
of National Literacy Day, Sunday, Jan. 27.

The launch of the Virtual Public Library in New Glasgow today
pushed public library services beyond the four walls of the
traditional library building to any location with an Internet
connection. Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library users are among
the first Nova Scotians to gain access to virtual public library

A new report on teacher demand and supply in Nova Scotia
concludes there is time to avoid a predicted widespread teacher
shortage. The Report on Teacher Demand and Supply says overall
the province will have more than enough teachers until 2005-06.

Ken Meech is the new interim chief financial officer (CFO) for
