Jason Dykens is setting a good example for his children. The married father of three was working for minimum wage and decided to continue his education to secure a higher paying job for his family. He completed his General Education Diploma (GED) in May 2006, and on Thursday, July 27, was announced the Nova Scotia recipient of the Council of the Federation Literacy Award.

Thirteen adult learners are graduating today, June 28, and Thursday, June 29, with their Nova Scotia high school diplomas. The graduates have completed programs offered by the South Shore Regional School Board in Queens and Lunenburg counties and supported by the Nova Scotia School for Adult Learning.

The last time Uta Othmer saw the inside of a classroom was more than 30 years ago in Germany when she completed a Grade 11 diploma. After raising her children, the Windsor, N.S. resident went looking for work and found that the only jobs she could get were at low or minimum wage. So, at 50 years of age, she enrolled at Windsor Adult High School.

Inspired by her mother's own return to learning at the age of 48, Lorraine Dalton enrolled in the Sydney Adult Education Centre to make a better future for her son. Ms. Dalton, a second-generation adult learner, completed Grade 10 nearly a decade ago, but went back to school and this year, earned her high school diploma.
