Description of Organization:
The Atlantic Home Building & Renovation Sector Council (AHB&RSC) provides industry-based training and other supports for the development of human resources and skills needs of the residential construction sector in Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada. The AHB&RSC is directed by a board of industry representatives and receives funding from industry, and from federal and provincial governments, to carry out research, planning and capacity building activities. Description of Membership:
The membership of the federally-incorporated, non-profit organization is comprised of the appointed members to the Board of Directors. The composition of the Board is selected to provide: geographic representation; small, medium and large builders; new home construction and renovation; residential developers; manufactured housing; industry associations; residential warranty providers; and others. The Council works in close partnership with industry practitioners and associations, governments and other stakeholders who share the Council's mandate. 2005-06 Board of Directors: Richard Miller, President and Board Chair; Edmund Benoit, Vice-President and Vice-Chair; Pat Mulcahy, Secretary/Treasurer; Peter Brown, Director (Prince Edward Island representative; Michael Hennigar, Director; Bob McLaughlin, Director (New Brunswick representative; Gary Moore, Director; Jane Morgan, Director (Newfoundland and Labrador representative); Michael Senz, Director; Rob Williams, Director; Mary Kenny, Executive Director.



Description 
The Council has approached Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations to explore the possibility of introducing legislation to establish the Nova Scotia Residential Construction Commission (NSRCC) with authority to implement mandatory licensing of residential contractors. To date, only preliminary discussions have taken place. Discussions are also ongoing with the Department of Education, Apprenticeship Training and Skills Development regarding formal recognition of residential trades specializations and Compulsory Certification of a renewed Carpentry Trade designation.   View
