Department of Natural Resources

Crown Lands, Lease - Campsite

Who Needs This Lease?

Anyone who has an existing structure on (Provincial) Crown land under the control of the N.S. Department of Natural Resources. [This structure can be used only for personal recreation purposes.]

Please Note:

The Campsite Lease Policy was approved by cabinet in 1989 to deal with requests to build a campsite for personal recreational purposes, on (Provincial) Crown Land under the administration and control of the Department of Natural Resources.

This Policy made provision for the Department to hold 5 lottery draws for obtaining campsite leases. The last draw took place on August 31, 1995. The Department, therefore, is no longer issuing campsite leases for new sites.

Applicants may, however, obtain a lease through an assignment of an existing lease, subject to approval. The onus is on the landowner to locate a lease owner who wishes to assign their lease.

Anyone who has a structure on Crown land, without permission from the Department, is considered unauthorized. The structure is subject to removal, pursuant to Section 39 of the Crown Lands Act.
