211 to Co-ordinate Offers of Support for Refugees

Immigration (Jan. 2005 - Feb. 2021)

Nova Scotians wishing to offer support for refugees who will soon settle in the province can call 211.

Beginning today, Nov. 17, 211 will record offers of aid. This can include clothing, food, lodging or financial donations.

"Nova Scotians are caring and our communities have made it clear they want to help the refugees who will soon be in our province," said Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab. "As we prepare for their arrival to Canada, I encourage all Nova Scotians who wish to help to call 211."

The provincial government has been working closely with community groups and other government agencies to prepare for the arrival of refugees. 211's database will help ensure that supports are in place when refugees arrive in Nova Scotia.

"We have been overwhelmed with the generous offers of support from Nova Scotians, said Gerry Mills, director of operations for the Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia. "Now 211 will provide a way to collect all these offers."

Calls to 211 are toll-free from any phone in Nova Scotia. Callers will be asked for specific details of the support they are able to provide and to leave contact information for followup.
