Brochures Will Help Mi'kmaw Communities Better Prepare for Emergencies

Residents of First Nations in Nova Scotia will be better able to plan for, and respond to, emergencies with two new tools from the Emergency Management Office.

Two brochures on using 911 and preparing for emergencies have been translated into Mi'kmaw, and copies are being distributed to all 13 First Nations in the province.

"The Emergency Management Office has been working with Mi'kmaq Chiefs to offer whatever support we can in emergency preparedness," said Zach Churchill, Minister responsible for the Emergency Management Office. "Having these brochures in Mi'kmaw will give First Nations communities more tools to help families stay safe during emergencies."

"It is significant that the Nova Scotia Emergency Management Office has translated their brochures into Mi'kmaw," said Chief Leroy Denny, lead chief of the social portfolio for the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi'kmaq Chiefs. "Having resources made available, in our own language, will be extremely helpful to our communities in what may be a stressful situation."
