25 May 1801

Report of the committee on hemp to the Lieutenant Governor, on the growth of hemp on the cultivated land of the province. Leading consideration is to promote agriculture and prevent the farmer from thinking his interests are injured by cultivating hemp, "without which prevention no beneficial consequences can possibly arise to the Mother country, by way of making up for any deficiency of supply, which may happen to her from the fickle politics of the northern European powers." Cultivation and manufacture should form two distinct branches, cultivation to be assigned to the farmer, manufacture to persons in each township who understand it and who should be encouraged to build the hemp works necessary. Fixed price, ready market and inspection of hemp recommended. Committee advises sending a circular letter to farmers and agricultural societies inviting information, and for warding and circulating directions on hemp culture. Signed.
