Halifax City Works Department

For researchers with older homes in peninsular Halifax, another rich source of information is available within the surviving records for the Building Inspector’s Office (RG 35-102, Series 39, Section I):

  • vols. 1-4 – index to building permits, 1892-1907; 1929-1949 (arranged by date)
  • vols. 29-59 – building permits, 1906-1949 (arranged by street)
  • vol. 60 – applications to move buildings, 1912 -1924

These records contain names of the property owner and architect, plus details of building construction. The original records have been transferred to the Halifax Regional Municipality Archives in Dartmouth; copies on microfilm are available at the Nova Scotia Archives (microfilm numbers: 23518-23552).
