'An East Coast Port': Halifax in Wartime, 1939-1945

Governor General inspecting messengers, A.R.P. 6

The Halifax Mail, 25 Septrember 1944, p. 3, reported on the Governor-General's inspection: "More than 1500 members of groups comprising the Halifax Civil Emergency Corps yesterday were insprected by His Excellency the Governor General and Her Royal Highness Princess Alice. The colorful parade, in many shades of uniforms, and steel helmets, interspersed by the grey and brown tunics of the uniformed branches and the dazzling white of the nurses' uniforms and scarlet flashed cloaks was an impressive sight as it stretched along Morris Street for more than one and a half blocks."
