Men in the Mines

A History of Mining Activity in Nova Scotia, 1720-1992

"The Ovens"

"In June, 1861, gold was reported found in this area of great natural beauty. It was one of the earliest discoveries and activity was limited, with miners using picks, shovels, pans, sluices and rockers to recover the gold." Painting is one of a series by Purcell on display at the Museum of Industry and donated by WMC International Limited - Americas Division and Western Mining Corporation, Australia.
