George Creed - Mi'kmaq Petroglyphs

Tracing of a petroglyph of a Mi'kmaq canoe with two sails

Date: 1888

Petroglyph tracings D: Canoes #5. 4 negatives. Marion Robertson's Rock Drawings of the Micmac Indians finds this petroglyph of particular interest because of "the sails which, with a favourable wind, made a canoe go 'swiftly as the throw of a stone.' Sails were a thick-limbed spruce tree, or were made of cedar or birch bark or the well-dressed skin of a young moose."
