Tower of London 4 May 1755

Madam

I am favoured with yours of the 16 Dec last
and am much concerned for the loss of Mr Cowley.
As to his affairs here, I can give you very little
comfort, his Balance in my hands is £5.19.9. There
is due to him from the Office his pay from 1 Oct to the day
of his Death but these Sums can be paid for no one but
an Administrator appointed by the Court of Doctors
Commons here. He has drawn on me a Bill of
£60, to Daniel Dyson dated 15 Jan.1755 & one of £10, to
William Mackay dated 18 Nov 1754 both which are returned
Protested. As to his affairs at Minorca I know
nothing of. I am very sorry to say it but I find
by all accounts that he died in Debt greatly more than
these Sums will pay.
Your Memorial was presented to the Board
& Read, but their answer was that as they have no
Fund for this purpose they can give you no relief
nor is there any Precedent of a Pension to an Engineer’s
Widow.
          I am Madam
          Your most humble
          Servant
          W Bogdani

Mrs Cowley
