'An East Coast Port': Halifax in Wartime, 1939-1945

Daley-Nickerson wedding. Ruth Davies Nickerson and Lawrence Frederic Daley were married in St. Matthew's United Church, Halifax, on 26 June 1941. The Halifax Herald, Friday, 27 June 1941, p. 7, reported the event as "one of the loveliest weddings of the season . . ." with a long description: "The bride entered the church with her father, by whom she was given in marriage. She looked charming in an ivory silvered satin Bebe frock fashioned with Sweetheart neckline, fitted waist and long tight sleeves, the full gathered skirt ending in a three yard train. The veil of misty bridal tulle was caght [sic] to a cap of orange blossoms and extended beyond the train. She carried a beautiful bouquet of gardenias. Miss Helen Daley, sister of the groom, and Allison Robb of Bedford, were the bridesmaids, and they were dressed alike in Romantic gossamer gowns of turquoise blue chiffon with large picture hats of marching shade with butterfly bows of grosgrain ribbon at the front, and they carried large arm bouquets of American Beauty roses. Mrs. Nickerson, the bride's mother, was attired in a long navy crepe dress with petal, pink faille jacket, her hat being a Goulding model of tuscan baku with ombre-rose velvet ribbon and a large single matching rose at the back. Mrs. Daley, mother of the groom, wore a dove grey embroidered ninon dress with a large marching tulle gorgette model hat caught underneath the brim with a band and bow of tulle. Murray Gould acted as best man for the bridegroom, and Clifford Nickerson, Jr., brother of the bride, George Hagen, George Corston and Roland Hurst were the ushers." A reception was later held in the Lord Nelson Hotel.
