'An East Coast Port': Halifax in Wartime, 1939-1945

At the beginning, the movement was mainly British mothers and their young children who came to Canada upon the invitation of relatives and friends. Later it developed into a movement of unaccompanied children whose parents paid their passage, children from private schools, and others whose passage was paid by the Canadian or United Kingdom governments. The Canada Year Book 1942, pp. 164-165, describes the "British 'Guest' Children" and mentioned almost 6,000 children arrived up to 31 March 1941.
