Halifax and Its People / 1749-1999

"Warrant Officers, Sergeant Majors & Sergeants of 63rd Battalion, Halifax Rifles, Halifax, N.S., about 1890. 13 of them wearing North-West Rebellion Medals of 1885"

The North West Rebellion of 1885 was the culmination of discontent on the part of Métis, Indians and white settlers, which had simmered since the Red River Rebellion of 1869/70. In Ottawa, the government reacted swiftly, mobilizing troops – nearly all militia units – to assist in putting down the insurrection. The 63rd Battalion of the Halifax Rifles was the only Nova Scotian unit to take part.
