Hans Hoffman and art students
Hans Hoffmann (1880-1966), artist and teacher, helped change the face of American painting through experiments with space, colour and form. He became an important artist in the development of abstraction in American art. Ruth Wainwright (one of Aileen Meagher's art teachers) and Aileen herself studied under Hoffman in the 1950s. Aileen Meagher visited Provincetown, Massachusetts, in 1953 and 1955, and took summer art courses under Hoffman at Provincetown in 1954 and 1957. Meagher is standing, wearing a light dress, and between women.
