Letter from Chearnley to the Provincial Secretary regarding the report for the Lt. Gov. on expenditures of the Department of Indian Affairs, monies lent to Joseph Baptiste of Pomquet to allow him to build a house for his family, agriculture among the Mi'kmaq and the harassment of Mi'kmaq by whites on reserved land in Lunenburg.

As C.I. Affairs I have to report for the information of his Excellency the Lieut Govenor [Governor]
The Twelve Hundred dollars placed to my Credit has been expended almost wholly in the purchase of Blankets and Clothing for the Indians
In a few cases where real distress existed at the recommendation of Magistrates and other gentlemen who have bought the matter to my notice I have furnished the Families with Flour and meal in small Quantaties [Quantities]
I have also at the recommendation of John McKinnon Esqr M.P.P backed by a Petition numerously signed by respectable people. payed the sum of Twenty dollars to enable an Indian (Joseph Baptiste) residing at Pomket
