Marian writes: "As the holidays draw near it brings you to mind, if anything more forcibly than usual, and there is little of the time that you are not with us, for we so often think of you and wish you could be here for this or for that, and if for nothing else just to see your sunny face and hear you yak off one of your sage remarks; and my dear, how about your doing a dance for us: according to the way you began last summer, by this time you should be ready for the Grand Opera House..." A note in Annie's handwriting, on the reverse of the last page, reads: "From Cousin Marion L. Knickerbocker, Chicago, Ill., after my long happy visit there while attending the Art Institute."
The letter refers to the recent death of Marian's grandmother (and Annie's great-aunt), Mary Ann Marsters. As Marsters died on October 20, 1897, the letter has been dated 1897.
