American prisoners escape while working in Dartmouth

After shipwreck and disease, the greatest risk facing privateersmen was captivity. Worst off were those jailed in fever-ridden Caribbean jails. But life in Halifax’s Melville Island prison was no picnic, thus escape attempts were common.
