provide what was necessary for them, and it would soon be rather burdensome to pay it out of my own pocket and wait the tardy consideration of the subject by the Government I represent. I had no idea of recovering any fund when I first spoke to you and therefore used all the economy possible under your verbal authority.
With respect to the trifling proceeds of the unfortunate Captain's vessel, Mr Wallace paid it over to me without attending in the slightest manner to the outfit. I could not withhold it from the poor fellow and I am sure had you been placed in my situation you would have done the same.
I have not written officially, but bring the subject before you in this manner and shall feel obliged if you will think it over and favor me with a reply.
