Changes to the Tourist Accommodations Registry

Starting 21 March 2024, all current tourist accommodation registrations are extended to September 2024.

Under the Tourist Accommodations Registration Act (TARA), tourist accommodations operators and short-term rental (STR) hosts offering accommodation for a period of 28 days in a row or less are required to register to operate in Nova Scotia.

Here are the updates every tourist accommodation host needs to be aware of:

  • All current tourist accommodation registrations are extended to September 2024. For properties with a valid 2023/2024 registration number, no action is required.
  • New tourist accommodations must register. A property that isn’t currently registered may register under the current system and regulations, with the assurance that these registrations will remain valid until September 2024. Anyone who has deactivated their registration must register as a new accommodation.
  • Please visit Register your tourist accommodation - Government of Nova Scotia to register as a new accommodation.

Changes to the regulations coming Fall 2024

Last fall, government announced changes to the Tourist Accommodations Registration Act that will change how short-term rentals are regulated to help make more long-term housing available. Implementation of changes are targeted for the fall of 2024. Until then, registered tourist accommodations can continue to operate with their current registration numbers and fees.

Deactivating your registration

You can deactivate your registration at any time. Complete the deactivate registration form.

By deactivating your registration, you may not operate. This means you can’t hold bookings, accept bookings or advertise the accommodation for your short-term accommodation (28 days or less). You will no longer be eligible for provincial tourism programs or listings on NovaScotia.com for this accommodation.

If you want to reactive your listing, you will be required to register as a new accommodation. This will include new payment of required fees and you will be assigned a new number.
