Government employee, retiree and member employer benefits

Government employee, retiree and member employer benefit applications and changes may experience a delay. If you can, send your form to the Benefits Unit by email. Life Insurance Beneficiary Nomination Forms also need to be sent by mail (in addition to sending by email).

Business and employment

Labour Board

In-person hearings, mediation meetings, case management conferences and interviews (like exams) for April and May are suspended until further notice.

You need to file documents by email (not fax, mail or courier) until further notice.

Pension Regulation

Annual Information Returns and Actuarial Valuation Reports that were due 31 March or 30 April have been given a filing extension until 31 May 2020. The extension is automatic—plan administrators don’t need to apply for it. If you have questions about another filing deadline, email Pension Regulation. We aren’t taking phone calls now, but will check voice messages when we can.

Pesticide Certification

Pesticide certifications that expire between 1 December 2019 and 30 June 2020 are extended for 1 year at no charge. The province is extending/issuing pesticide certificates for 1 year only. The standard fee will be applied at your next renewal or application for a new certificate.

Traffic control person and temporary workplace signer

Traffic Control Person (TCP) and Temporary Workplace Signer (TWS) certifications expiring 1 January 2020 or later will remain valid until further notice.

Workers’ Compensation Appeals Tribunal hearings

All in-person hearings at the Workers’ Compensation Appeals Tribunal are postponed until further notice. Alternative hearing options, like written and telephone hearings, may be available. Some appeals may be rescheduled to a later date. The Tribunal is continuing to operate and will contact anyone with a scheduled hearing to discuss options.

Driving

Accessible parking permits

All blue permanent accessible parking permits are valid until 31 August 2020.

Driver licences

All driver licences expiring in March, April and May are extended until 31 August 2020.

Driving tests

Knowledge tests and road test booking for driver licences are unavailable until further notice.

Foreign vehicles plates and licences

All foreign licence plates and driver's licences operating in Nova Scotia are valid until 31 August 2020.

Non-essential services

Non-essential Registry of Motor Vehicle services (like purchasing handbooks or getting personalized or antique licence plates) are unavailable.

Temporary permits

All temporary permits expiring in March 2020 or later are extended until 31 August 2020.

Vehicle registrations

All vehicle registrations expiring 31 December 2019 and later are extended until 31 August 2020.

Education

GED tests

GED testing at NSCC is suspended until further notice. Transcript and certificate replacements may experience a delay.

Hunting education

Hunter Education, Trappers, NS Guides and Bow Hunters courses are cancelled until further notice.

Insurance exams

Insurance licensing examinations are suspended until further notice.

Pesticide Certification Exams

In-person exams are suspended until further notice.

Nova Scotia Student Loans

Nova Scotia Student Loan payments are paused until 30 September 2020. You don't need to make any payments, and your loans won't accrue interest. The suspension is automatic – you don't need to apply.

Public schools

Public schools will be closed until at least 1 May 2020.

Water and Wastewater Operator Certification exams

Operator certification exams have been suspended until further notice.

Healthcare

MSI (Medavie Blue Cross)

The MSI reception location at 230 Brownlow Avenue in Dartmouth is closed until further notice.

Law, justice and safety

Correctional facilities

Nova Scotia's correctional facilities are closed to all visitors and volunteer organizations until further notice.

Provincially operated shooting ranges

Provincially operated shooting ranges are closed until 30 June 2020 or further notice.

Marine and fisheries

Sportfishing

Sportfishing season is delayed until further notice.

Museums, galleries and parks

Provincial Parks

Provincial parks, beaches and tourist attractions are closed. Reservations for the 2020 camping season are suspended until further notice.

Access Nova Scotia

Only urgent Registry of Motor Vehicles transactions are available at the Amherst, Bridgewater, Dartmouth, Kentville, Stellarton, Sydney and Yarmouth locations by appointment. You need to call 1-800-670-4357 to make an appointment. Other locations and in-person services are unavailable until further notice.

Land Registration

In-person services at Land Registration are suspended until further notice.

Nova Scotia Aquaculture Review Board

The office of the Nova Scotia Aquaculture Review Board is closed until further notice. Hearings are also suspended until further notice.

Nova Scotia Geomatics Centre

All in-person services at the Nova Scotia Geomatics Centre in Amherst are suspended. You can contact us by phone or online to access our services.

Provincial Tax Commission

In-person services as suspended until further notice.

Registry of Motor Vehicles

Only urgent Registry of Motor Vehicles transactions are available at the Amherst, Bridgewater, Dartmouth, Kentville, Stellarton, Sydney and Yarmouth locations by appointment. You need to call 1-800-670-4357 to make an appointment. Other locations and in-person services are unavailable until further notice.

Tourism Contact Centre

The Tourism Contact Centre, which handles calls from travellers seeking trip planning information, is closed until further notice.

Visitor information centres

Year-round visitor information centres in Amherst and the Halifax Stanfield International Airport are closed until further notice.

Vital Statistics

In-person services at Vital Statistics are suspended until further notice. We can accommodate urgent requests for marriage licences at the Amherst, Bridgewater, Dartmouth, Kentville, Stellarton, Sydney and Yarmouth Access Centre locations. Call 1-877-848-2578 to make an appointment. Private Deputy Issuers aren’t issuing marriage licences.
